In other news

That was out there and I was not aware, yet the Khaleej Times (at https://www.khaleejtimes.com/entertainment/shot-in-uae-coming-to-cinemas-next-week-sci-fi-epic-dune-2-to-welcome-fans-at-premiere) gave me that the second Dune movie was shot on 20 locations all on the UAE. This is nice. You seldom get to see news of that nature (apart from LOTR all over New Zealand) and as such I was surprised. Now, lets be clear Dune cannot be filmed in too many locations. So Saudi Arabia and the UAE (and a few places around the Sahara) are mostly it. So it was nice to see that the UAE catered to this magnificent film. As the article states, the 20 locations were in the UAE, the Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi to be more precise. And next week Sunday, the red-carpet event is set to take place on February 18 at Vox Cinemas, The Galleria, Al Maryah Island. I reckon that might be a UAE first, but that is merely an educated guess. A team of 300 local, 250 international crew and 500 extras were used during the 27-day shoot. As such it is a movie to see as soon as possible. I will be watching the first movie on BlueRay again two days before the launch in Sydney. I won’t be joining Timothée Chalamet or Zendaya in the UAE but I don’t think they will be heartbroken on that part of the event.

On the other hand, I have had to deal with my alcoholic neighbour who had been kicking and screaming at the door and then just being an ass. The landlord will do nothing and after 4 hours I pretty much had enough. This got my wheels turning and I think I have come up with a solution to get rid of around 20% of the planet. I had the idea for a side setting in one of my stories, but now I could solve the housing issue in Sydney. I have been waiting for over 10 years now and in that setting I could solve it another way.

OK, I admit it is not nice, but stress and anxiety can create its own solutions, even if they are out of whack to say the least.

Those who read the books of Frank Herbert know that the emperor wanted to take care of one duke. That duke was too popular and that creates envy. He used the Harkonen to deal with his problem and I saw another option to make one of my stories a little more challenging (Engonos). Here the problem is that it is not entirely original. Take any James Bond setting. With 1-2 exemptions they were all about world domination and reducing the population (by a lot). Here I to a small degree grasp at ‘On her majesties secret service’ combine that with the unproven accusations on Covid and you get an entirely new setting. Is it totally original? Not really, my examples get you part of the roadmap. Polar Star (an Arkady Renko story) gave me parts, but not parts of that story. It merely awakened me to a larger setting that could set the stage. There are two deployment options here, but one raises questions because I have no expertise in that direction and ‘On her majesties secret service’ finalised the road trip. I’ll grant you it is no Dune, but when you consider that we have no Spice Melange and as such we have no monster like Rabban, I had to make due and I think I found a handle on the idea.

So what sets of the charter in a person? What makes that person go berserk?  I am not sure, but one drunk shouldn’t get you that far. It is too much psychoses. Like the girl who met this boy she really likes and hoping to meet him again. She starts to kill her family members with poison, hoping he will attend another funeral. Even if we do not know what made him come to the first funeral in the first place. So was the girl creative, insane or shortsighted? I tend to go with all three, but that is me.

So in all we need to see how cogs fit together. Frank Herbert did so for half a dozen books and the first three showed him to be a master. There is a reason that it is a magnificent book, just like the Lord of the Rings (1954) turned out to be. I have absolutely no hope to be ever anywhere near that good, but no matter what you think JK Rowling started on page one and she is now a multibillionaire. I have no plans to be that good (or that famous) and this is not about the money. It is about the creativity. Creativity for good or for evil remains creativity. Harnessing that creativity is what I am after and I do hope it is for good. Dune is one of the shining examples of my life ever since I read it the first time around roughly 45 years ago, around the same time I got the Lord of the Rings. So in other news we will get Dune 2 in less then 3 weeks, Dune 3? No idea, but that is supposed to be Dune Messiah. I wonder where that will be filmed. Time will tell, it usually does.

Try to enjoy your weekend, mine really sucks this time around.

The downward spiral

We all face it at times. It is not as negative as it sounds, for some it is a mere form of awareness. I am facing mine at present. A small defence, I damaged my left shoulder so I am best friends (sort of) with Codeine. Not enough to be dopey the dwarf, enough to not drive a tank through the streets of Sydney, so there is manoeuvring space (for me that is). My downward spiral has nothing to do with the shoulder, but with my IP. You see I am in an iterative mood. I see improvements all around me. Games that could be better, movies that are substandard, music that could be different and lets be clear, I have absolutely no idea on music. As such my mind became the ultimate critic. Now, when it comes to my own IP, especially the 5G one, it makes perfect sense to be in an iterative mode, the innovation was version 0.9 (or 1.0), I am now on version 1.3, 1.4 is a bigger adjustment for real estate, but I am trying to find a way to either include it, or consider a cheaper version just for real estate. I have not made up my mind on that yet.

I have been on an iterative setting for a few other things too. Now for the most I have an intense hatred for iterative thinking. It never goes anywhere fast and focussing on innovation is more rewarding as well. But the person who thinks that they can come up with innovation is utterly nuts. Just like the business people that consider that true business is profit without costs, one needs the other or it is pointless ambulance chasing.

All this started when I saw a Chinese add on android regarding a Chinese mobile game, It was not the first one I saw and then the thoughts hit me more profoundly. If I am correct, I (at that moment) figured out what Tencent is planning, if I am correct than it implies that there is a lot more coming in 2023/2024 than anyone ever suspected. I feel certain that it was a fluke, but the cogs started to connect and if it is correct it is Epic Games that opened the door. That Fortnite case is having a much larger impact. If I am correct (which is not a given) that it might set a case where Tencent is setting a new foundation towards gambling and it is all perfectly legal, yet with the Apple and Android setting of buying goods via third party providers, there will be a new case of white washing funds all over the world. I will have to find the advertisement again, but it was a rare case that I suddenly get a Chinese ad (in Chinese) and the image that flashed by gave me a worry, and weirdly enough it took me back to March 15th when I wrote ‘When is a slot machine not one?’ (At https://lawlordtobe.com/2022/03/15/when-is-a-slot-machine-not-one/), and I as the dreamer focussed on the 5G side of things, all whilst I should have looked in the other direction and more importantly, it puts the FBI and their peers pretty much out of business. I wrote at that time “And those not in Las Vegas will have the option to massively deal and handle in crypto currency. An outlet outside of the bank stage. An outlet that circulates currency unmonitored” my mind was with the slot machine, whilst the mention of “The slot machine was a laundromat for crypto currency” which is not something I focussed on, merely the technology, but now consider that these systems traffic between wide area networks and transfer bitcoins all over the planet, and the watching eyes of governments were blind to it. The padlocks are suddenly more than a lock, more than the stage of presentation, they are phones to other nations and they merely deal in digital data. So what does it take NOW to transfer 3,000 bitcoins unseen? Think of it, the internet is monitored, the dark-web is not to be trusted (unless you control it) but a slot machine, from a reputable vendor? There was an underlying story in Casino Royale (yes, the Bond movie) I reckon that there is a whole range of devices coming out and the nice part is that they could connect to a padlock on a slot machine. And that is merely a starting point. What happens when this takes a sharp turn to the right? I can guarantee you now that there is no government with proper protection or rules in place to stop any of this, and with a fully deployed 5G it becomes pretty much impossible to monitor it all.

Chook Chook thinking

Yes, I could have said ‘train of thought’ but that would be too obvious, wouldn’t it. The thought came from two articles. The two articles set my mind in motion and they are not related in any way, other then the provider of both articles which is Reuters. The first article (at https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-regulation-tencent-m-a/chinese-antitrust-regulator-blocks-tencents-5-3-billion-video-games-merger-idUSKCN2EG029) gave me ‘Chinese antitrust regulator blocks Tencent’s $5.3 billion video games merger’, I have nothing really to add, other then the thoughts I had wondering what the antitrust regulators were thinking. I am not saying, or implying that anything wrong was done. The ‘official’ version is “Antitrust laws are statutes developed by governments to protect consumers from predatory business practices and ensure fair competition” that is the official version, unofficial it is that competitors use their version of the excuse “to protect consumers” into a version of “stopping competitors with actual innovative inventions to get the upper hand over their need for revenue (read: greed)”, Google has been the most clear victim but they are definitely not alone. In the article we see that it is about Tencent Holdings Ltd’s and the merger of Huya and DouYu. If the merger goes through we get a setting where their combined market share in the video game live streaming industry would be over 70%. So I am not sure what to think, I do not know whether it is valid or not. It was merely an article that  got my attention.

The second article is ‘FTC extends probe of Amazon, MGM deal’ (at https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mgm-m-a-amazon/ftc-extends-probe-of-amazon-mgm-deal-source-idUSKCN2EF2EF). There we see “Amazon.com’s deal to buy movie studio MGM for $8.5 billion is headed for an extended probe by the Federal Trade Commission, after a source familiar with the matter said on Friday the agency had issued a second request in its review of the merger”, so there is no connection there, and there will not be one. But the two articles made me think on what else Amazon could do. They do have the inside Track at present and if they push they could do titles that all others are not considering. To see this, we need to go back to 1983 then ‘Dragon’s Lair’ took the breath away from nearly everyone who saw it, it was an arcade machine and a laserdisc. No one had done it before and it took the cake, now on streaming no laserdisc is required, with MGM, Amazon has the option of launching a whole range of interactive movies. James Bond might be the most visible one, but when we consider the size of their IP which also includes the Hobbit, TombRaider and a few others, we can see that interactive movies have an option, and Amazon will own it all. The larger station is not merely interactive movies, but it is a play style that Sony and Microsoft added to their games, they merely forgot to make games like that. They did nothing wrong, they added flavour to their games. Yet Dragon’s Lair showed that a game like that is possible. In 1995 Tia Carrere added to this with The Daedalus Encounter, it started on 3DO but it did get on PC on the early age of VGA and CDROM systems with often no more than 300KB/s. Now with the consoles and streaming systems coming we can do a lot more and now we see that Amazon might be holding on to a lot more and even if the FTC tries to block it, it is merely a temporary setback, Amazon has the inside track and when the others consider this they might wake up and take old ideas into innovative new internet streaming highways.

As I said, it was merely a train of thought, but so far the others aren’t showing their actions and that is before Netflix steps into the ring, consider what they have and what they would be able to push for, the innovative player takes the cake, that has been proven by Sony and by Microsoft in the past, and with the bar set to $195,000,000,000 in 2022, do you think that the innovators are going to let slip any sliver of a pie that big? What are you thinking?

As stated it is merely a train of thought, but is it that far fetched when you think of what we can now achieve?
