The Apple conundrum

Yup, it is a mystery and honestly I do not get it. Now lets be clear they haven’t done anything wrong. But a few cogs started grinding after an article in the Guardian. The article (at https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/dec/11/apple-macbook-pro-m3-review-beloved-laptop-is-back-in-black-battery-screen) was placed last year, on December 11th. There we see the new MacBook Pro and it is a beauty, especially when you have been exposed to silver editions for about a decade, that jet black is a black diamond, nothing less. It isn’t cheap, but the Apple M3 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine can be upgraded to 128GB RAM (I would select the 64GB RAM for sentimental reasons) and can be upgraded with 8TB storage, a little much to my liking, so I would chose the 4TB edition. I wrote some time ago about an Apple/Adobe deal and Apple should consider it for the configuration I am ‘considering’. You see vloggers either go big or they can go home. The market is that way and too many are working below par. They either strap up or become irrelevant and the MacBook pro could allow for that. But that is not why this article is here. The old iMac’s were not my thing (I had the G4, G5), the old iMac didn’t do it for me, this one is a beauty and for vloggers the workstation to have, or is it? You see the iMac can only have 24GB of RAM, which is enough for the bulk of all vloggers, but the limit of 2TB is not. I have no idea why Apple didn’t allow for the upgrade to 4TB. Now, with the vlogging groups and medium format digital camera’s (at 100MP), having 4TB makes perfect sense. Why don’t the people at Apple see that? Doing the Microsoft path with extra external drives doesn’t hold the mustard. And this is not a time setting, the MacBook Pro is out for a while now, that means that in addition to that, Apple had 3-8 months to mull things over. So why wasn’t this done? The iMac is gorgeous, as such any vlogger would love many hours behind their workstation with that 24” screen making their videos look absolutely perfect. And yes, to get that level of result Adobe is pretty much a minimum requirement. Nothing against the GoPro and its software, which (as far as I have seen it) is pretty good, but today’s vlogger needs to edit and past basic options the only real player here (with no competition) is Adobe. 

All this is pretty much basic information out in the open, am I the only one seeing that? Consider that 2TB is a lot, but it already needed the operating software, other software (whatever you also need it for) and 100GB for the complete Adobe suite (as far as I can tell), now at this point you will see that 2TB is enough. However, 4K vloggers need 45GB per hour, as such you require the max of that iMac within a year and then you better clean up fast and much of it. This is why the 4TB is enough and gives you enough time. Consider one project, 2 hours, editing space that is quickly amounting to 200GB space, so 5 of these and the first TB is gone. Space gets lost pretty quick and those salespeople relying on you keeping your space clean have never considered the creative mind. This is why the 4TB matters and the MacBook Pro does that (even more then needed), so why wasn’t the iMac offered that option at present? I get that it might not have been an option when it released, but now? And consider that this requirement was clearly visible for almost a year. The lack of space doesn’t make sense to me. Should that person rely on medium format digital camera’s that space gets lost even faster. Consider that this could allow for PSD files up to 2GB (their Maximum), consider that a photoshoot could be anything between 50-300 images making this a 600GB nightmare and nightmare is the right word. You see any pro photographer has 1-2 photoshoots a day and managing system space is not their highest priority, making the Apple stance even less comprehensible (to me at least).

I see a lack of interactions, a lack of outreach to the photographer environment (a slight assumption) and in all this Apple is coming up short. What frightens me is that I expect these shortcomings from Microsoft, to see them from Apple is a little bewildering. But that could be me.

Useful unregistered IP

This is the stage I (and others) are at times set to. You see, I needed an alternative to keeping my IP in house, in house is data at rest and people will get to it, large companies have no scruples when it comes to profit and some are a lot more desperate than others. So I had to create a place where no one would look and I went to a place where EVERYONE looked. The safest place is often underfoot. This is not a place I created, someone created this setting for me. If I was a betting man, I would think it was the Russian Mafia and one of them was a photographing enthusiast. 

He (or she) was good enough to have it on the dark web under the eyes of the NSA for a long time. In the end I have no knowledge if he ever got caught, but the idea was really good, and I stumbled upon it by pure accident. That person, or someone connected to him made the error of placing the photoshop PSD online. If it had been a JPG file, I would never have been the wiser. But it was a photo of the Kremlin. I was looking for a different building and no matter how you set it, the Kremlin is a beautiful building, as is the grand mosque of Riyadh. It does not take an architect to admire the beauty of a building. One does not need to be from San Francisco to admire the Transamerica Pyramid. So there I was looking at the Kremlin in Photoshop. And I suddenly noticed something, in JPG I would have missed it. There was a second magenta level. One was #FF00FF, the second one was #FF02FF and that layer had morse code. 

Now consider a photo, 6720 × 4480 and morse is merely one pixel high. I can easily hide 60 lines in there without anything or anyone picking it up, the eyes cannot differentiate a pixel that is #ff02FF instead of #FF00FF, and if you have two layers. One in Magenta, One is Cyan #02FFFF added to #00FFFF and they end up in a JPG, you have a novel way of hiding a text, especially when it is morse and especially if the only way is to merge #FF02FF and #02FFFF into a combined layer. Consider that and consider

“.. -.     ….. –.     – …. . .-. .     .- .-. .     – .– —     -.. .. — . -. … .. — -. …     – …. .- –     .- .-. .     .. –. -. — .-. . -.. –..–     — . .-. . .-.. -.–     -… . -.-. .- ..- … .     – …. .     – . .-.. . -.-. — —     -.-. — — .–. .- -. .. . …     .. –. -. — .-. .     – …. .     -. . . -..     — ..-.     – …. .     -.-. — -. … ..- — . .-. … .-.-.-“, now consider that this line is one pixel high, I could add 120 lines on each picture and I am smart enough to only place the JPG in a place where 27,000,000 people roam, over all the boards, 3 sets of 4 dozen pictures does not even raise an eyebrow and as the images are not upsetting anyone, no one cares. I never uploaded them from anywhere I worked or lived. So good luck finding them, but on July 30th those images get a reduced limelight and that is the start of a race where some Americans are not invited. They had their chance and now lets see how some treat free IP, will they adhere and respect the consumer or will they make the same mistake? 

It was my way out, live or die, my IP will survive and it optionally will land in hands willing to keep the options open. Others had their options and were willing to make the bet that they could outthink me. But when you see where they would not look, because the margins were expected to remain low, how does that make them worthy of billions? You see, when you’ve never had that, you will never miss it and like others I have pride and I have ego and I find Microsoft unworthy, especially after they betrayed the gaming community (as I personally see it) after they got whipped by Nintendo in gaming (Nintendo Switch) after they got handed their guts with the Surface (Apple iPad) and soon after Adobe slaps them silly and take away their Powerpoint market. After Amazon removes their cloud presence in business and gaming. Why should they be allowed to live longer? They failed in 4 markets, isn’t that enough to ignore them?

Now I am making sure that they cannot claim any of my IP as I set it to an encrypted setting on the internet. And without those logs they remain clueless. I might never be rich, but I’ll have the last laugh and if Amazon catches on what Microsoft missed in META, they will be reduced to a third world IT company that will leave the top 10 of wealth players before 2030. There is only so much failure that they can adjust for, and we get it things go wrong “Uninstall Windows 11 KB5012643 if it crashes your apps”, I personally reckon that proper testing might have prevented a lot, but that might merely be me. We need to consider what we do and even as the US department of Defense trusts them, it does not mean that we need to make that same mistake. In all this, the useful unregistered IP was a way to keep my IP free from certain hassle and it was needed, especially as I find that time is running out and as more and more companies are getting weirdly nervous and greed driven to obtain more and more revenue. Microsoft is not alone, but it is the most visible one, partly due to all the corrections that Microsoft marketing needs to make on a global setting. So I rely on unregistered IP to keep mine decently safe and it is underfoot of a few players who never considered to look where everyone else was looking, they only needed the right pair of shades to see what needed to be seen. Pristine and weird

There are times when the dream is nice, really really nice. But nice does not cut it, it was also confusing. I was in some kind of mansion, not a normal mansion. The mansion seems to be in the UK, the gardens around the mansion had a British feel to it. It was the inside. At the very centre of the ground floor was a kitchen, or perhaps better a kitchen combination. Around that kitchen was a collection of cells. Each cell had an entrance part, that would link to reception areas. These would connect to some form of living room which connected to 3-4 smaller rooms. One was for some kind of office manager as well as business executives. It was some kind of consultancy firm, but it all was extremely high end, like the Rolls-Royce of consultancy firms, for the really really wealthy or important ones v(so it looked at least), but that was not what was weird. It was the software that the office managers looked. Its foundation was like a blend of Norton Commander and Norton Utilities, but like it was given to Adobe and they went to town on it. The front page, and everything connected could be edited and maintained to their own pleasure. Headers could be personalised, front screens were adjusted, and all subsequent screens were matched to a personal version. They seemingly all connected to some cloud setting. One manager started with some version of Calendar and a ToDo list. The left side connected to applications that this office manager needed. Different managers hd different profiles. The first one had a green setting, another was blue based, but that level of personalisation is one I have never seen before. It was like Adobe combined its colour abilities in an office setting, complete with dashboarding, database and some kind of presentation software. I saw glimpses of the presentation software, there were Powerpoint/Keynote elements, it had Prezi elements and it was free-flowing. Almost like any part could interact with Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and substance. It was weird and at times confusing, but everyone had its own true free and personalising side. It then dawned on me that most software is all about ‘the company view’, no one allows for TRUE FREEDOM AND PERSONALISATION. Cloud software should allow for this and such a system would be high end, and I reckoned that is why it would be an Adobe setting. On this foot, there is off course the rewarding idea that Microsoft could lose another slice of business, short sightedness and non evolved.  A side that niche players like Adobe with its Subscription software could optionally become a much larger opposition to other cloud system subscription players. A setting of such personalisation has other impacts too. But that is not the exercise of today. I saw files with two part headers, files with a blockchain part, a descriptive part and some time part. It as more than just time opened and time edited part. It had the last 5 edit times, timezone mentions. Localisation points, Computer GPS info, with linked map location (what office). This what I saw was all real next level shit and more important, it was the first time I saw a system that was designed for THE USER, not the propagation of a company. It was really nice, to adjust ANY part to the need of the office Assistant or business unit. An approach I never seen before to this degree, is this where we are going in the cloud? All files a much larger stage of interaction, with block-chaining on every part, an almost forensically secure system. 

Did I glimpse into what could come, what was possible, or did I not look into the right direction? I cannot tell. The mansion was overwhelming. Every business lounge was like a business lounge you see as a sitting room for the rich and famous. It was a confusing setting, but in all this the computers came back. I do remember that one office had an Apple setup, the others had some kind of Sony display, with some kind of super-slim computer attached to the display foot. I had never seen it before but it was no wider then the display foot, I initially didn’t even see it was a separate computer. The 32” Sony display looked amazing. I cannot tell what was more build to impress, the computer or the software both were amazing. And then I woke up.

An interesting sidestep in office software on a new level, a level office software never contemplated before and in this Adobe might have a large inside track, a track players like Microsoft are unable to tread, their ego stands in the way on too many points in such a track, as such, a player like Adobe could win a good chunk of that business.
